Is The President a Spy?
By Hank Silverberg

It was hard to find a topic for this week’s edition. The government remains partially shut down and the Washington region and a good part of the country was covered in snow as the week began. The President was still obstinate about getting his border wall and lying about the justification for it, and a group of 30 Democrats were on a fact finding mission to sunny Puerto Rico that included tickets to a benefit performance of “Hamilton” in San Juan.

I got no inspiration from the Twittersphere where people on both sides were still throwing around inaccurate statistics on illegal immigrants, including claims that the crime rate is up (it’s not, it’s actually down) and that “illegals” commit a disproportionate number of gruesome crimes in this country (totally false-see my previous blog below).
But one story did strike my fancy. I have published two political action-adventure novels, and I regret this plot never occurred to me. Several news sites have reported that before James Comey was fired, the FBI’s Counter Intelligence Unit, the folks who go after spies and focus on national security issues, had opened an investigation on Donald J Trump.

They were worried that Mr. Trump was either being duped by Russian agents, or that he might actually be a Russian “asset,” another word for spy. That probe was morphed into Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election after Comey was fired. It’s not clear if it is still part of that probe.

My first reaction was, “This would be a great Tom Clancy novel or a plot for a new 007 flick.” But as I was shoveling the five inches
(Five inches on the ruler in my driveway)
of snow out of my driveway and thought about the idea a bit more, it put a second chill up my spine that had nothing to do with the weather.
Mr. Trump did not allow any aides in the room with him when he met with Vladimir Putin, and there are reports that he confiscated notes taken by an interpreter during those meetings.

Members of the House Intelligence Committee, now controlled by the Democrats, are so concerned about it, they have renewed calls for a possible subpoena of the interpreter.

With all this in mind, let’s see what has happened in U.S.-Russian relations since Mr. Trump took office.

The biggest change in U.S. foreign policy with Russia was a decision by Mr. Trump to pull the U.S. military out of Syria. That actually began, unnoticed, this past week.  We could debate whether the U.S. should have been there in the first place, but the pullout will screw our Kurdish allies, who have been fighting both ISIS and the Assad Government for several years. Russia backs Assad. Mr. Trump said the pullout was natural, since ISIS has been destroyed. That simply is not true, according to numerous members of the intelligence community and our Israeli allies. Officially, the Israelis didn’t criticize Trump. Unofficially, they are not happy. We could have negotiated with the Russians for them to pull out their forces, allegedly also there to fight terrorism, but that was never even on the table. The result is more help for Russia in backing up Bashir Assad, a brutal dictator who has used chemical weapons against his own people.

Mr. Trump’s administration also took no action, not even some harsh words, when Russia opened fire on and seized three Ukrainian ships near Crimea in an escalation of their ongoing dispute. The incident was condemned by seven countries in Europe, including major allies France, Germany, and the U.K.
So, is Donald Trump a Russian spy? The idea sounds ludicrous.  And Trump was quick to deny it, kind of, on Twitter.

Wow, just learned in the Failing New York Times that the corrupt former leaders of the FBI, almost all fired or forced to leave the agency for some very bad reasons, opened up an investigation on me, for no reason & with no proof, after I fired Lyin’ James Comey, a total sleaze!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On Monday  morning he came out to the White House driveway to say "I never worked for Russia" and he then called the investigation "a hoax".

But my take is a bit different. Some really smart guys at the FBI, who spend their days going after spies and protecting national security, thought there was enough fishy business to open an investigation on the concept that our President was a Russian asset.  And the President responded in his typical fashion, attacking the media that reported it, and the agency that started it.

So this week started with the government still partially closed, with no movement from the man who said he owned the shutdown, Donald J Trump. Maybe that’s just what Trump wants, a government in chaos, the media under attack, and our allies angry at us. Or maybe that’s what Vladimir Putin wants.
