Election Debrief                                       #248

By Hank Silverberg

The election is over--for now. We have a few races undecided, so just what the Congressional power shift will eventually be is unclear. One thing we do know, as usual, all the pundits were wrong. There

was no "red wave." Democrats did better this year than in any mid-term election in the past 40 years. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has already attributed that to Democratic accomplishments in the last two years, and the general negative attacks from the GOP. There is some truth in that. The Build Back America legislation will move us forward while the abolishment of Roe v Wade and Republican's talk of a nationwide abortion ban will set us backward. I credit many American voters for seeing that.

Americans came out in large numbers and in most cases, saw through all the nasty rhetoric and picked rational, if not always reasonable, people to be our leaders.

(Then again, Georgians re-elected Marjorie Taylor Greene for Congress, so maybe I should take that sentence out.)

Only about 47% of eligible voters turned out in this past election according to the U.S. Elections Project at the University of Florida. With the stakes so high, that's a dismal figure, though it's still above every mid-term election in the last 60 years.

Young people who traditionally have the lowest turnout in non-presidential years, were much more of a factor this time with 30% of those 18-29 voting. That was the highest average for that age group in the past 30 years, and 63% of them voted for Democrats. In the key state of Pennsylvania, the number of young people voting for Democrats rose to 70%. You don't have to be a statistician to see they made a difference.

Voters under 30 also voted for Democrats by 28 points, but the Democrats lost every age group over 45 by at least 7 points.

Those 30-39, the same voters who helped Barak Obama to big victories in 2008 and 2012, supported Democrats this time with just a four-point edge.   If we could just get the Millennials off social media fake news sites and back to reality, it could bode well for the future. Maybe!

More than 150 candidates who have denied the results of the 2020 presidential election (out of 291), were either elected or re-elected last week, leaving many questions with the 2024 presidential election cycle about to begin.

I'm sorry to say that the presidential cycle could begin as early as this week with lots of talk about Donald Trump's possible announcement.

Let's just hope the candidates don't start airing any of those distorted and ridiculous campaign ads, at least until the calendar actually turns to 2024.

New Theories You May Have Missed

You are probably tired of reading about the election, so here's a story from a while back that you may have missed.

For decades, the theory of how the Western Hemisphere was initially populated has focused on a land bridge between what is now Russia's far east coast, and Alaska's west coast. The initial group of Eurasians was supposed to have crossed the Bering Sea 13,500 years ago and into the interior after a crack in the ice cover in the Rockies.

(Migration theories)
A new and different theory has been gaining momentum over the last five years, claiming a coastal migration route by sea in areas below the ice may have populated the interior of the hemisphere thousands of years earlier. Researchers have found sites of human habitation in southern Chile at the southern end of South America, far south of the ice cover as far back as 14,500 to 18,500 years ago. That means a possible trip by boat along the Pacific coastline.

There are also DNA samples indicating those South American inhabitants are related to the indigenous Mauri people of Australia. Similar DNA has been found in samples from Mexico.

But the Bering Sea ice bridge crossing theory is not dead yet. Another report released just before the pandemic shows fossils from 17,000 years ago, indicating the coastline of Alaska was brimming with plants and wildlife. That could indicate an ice-free route by sea thousands of years before it was originally thought. I have not found anyone who claims it could have happened both ways.

Either way, we need to pass on what we do know. The migrater's descendants were exploited and murdered from the early 15th century on by explorers, gold hunters and settlers from Western Europe. It's an exploitation that in some ways continues today.

Dumbest Quote of The Week!

She has probably lost the race for Governor, and we may not hear from her again for a while. But there is some talk that Arizona Republican Kari Lake might run for the Senate in a few years. So, she gets the nod for dumbest quote this week. Lake has indicated she will not accept the results of this year's election, even after all the votes are counted if she is not the winner. Lake has also been mentioned, though by whom, is not clear as a possible VP candidate in 2024. So, a reporter did what reporters do, asking her if she ends up as governor after some kind of recount, if she plans to serve her full term.

The first part of her answer was disrespectful:

"Are you new covering this race? Because we have talked about this before. I’ve answered this question. I am going to not only be the governor of Arizona for four years, I’m going to do two terms,”

That was followed by more arrogance:

“I’m going to be your worst fricking nightmare for eight years, and we will reform the media as well. We are going to make you guys into journalists again, so get ready. It’s gonna be a fun eight years; I can’t wait to be working with you.”

That comment makes me want to move to Arizona and become a reporter again just so I could question her every day about false statements and arrogant ambition. However, she has probably lost anyway. I suspect, since she has been an election denier, lawsuits are coming as soon as a winner is declared and it's not her. What makes her comments even dumber is that her former job was as a TV news anchor.
